Ace of Base: 3 Cushion Foundations to Try - By Vanessa Chia
You’ll be surprised at how well these non-K Beauty brands fare.
LANCÔME Teint Idole Ultra Cushion Foundation
An oil-free, high-coverage foundation with buildable coverage for a flawless finish. Also includes a patented Polar Cushion Technology that promises long-lasting wear.
My favourite of the trio. The finish is a soft radiance that isn’t too shiny, which is perfect for my combination skin. And even after a day of running around for meetings, my complexion still looked smooth and flawless. Love how lightweight it feels on the skin and its buildable coverage allows me to cover most imperfections, save for stubborn post-acne spots and prominent under-eye circles.

MAC COSMETICS Lightful C + Coral Grass SPF 50/PA++++ Quick Finish Cushion Compact Foundation
More skincare than makeup, this foundation is infused with skin-brightening active ingredients together with Coral Grass extract to plump and brighten the complexion, resulting in that lit-from-within glow. Also contains hydrating properties to strengthen and protect the skin at the same time.
The satin finish gives a subtle glow that is perfect for daily use, but doesn’t overpower. The brightening finish also left my complexion looking fresh and less dull and tired, indirectly helping me cheat on days when I wasn’t able to get in my eight hours of beauty sleep. The upgraded formula also keeps skin looking smooth and plumped. Its high sun protective properties are a huge bonus too.

Tom Ford Traceless Touch Foundation SPF 45 Satin-Matte Cushion Compact
Its water-, sweat- and humidity resistant formula ensures that the finish stays matte and fresh all day. Delivers a medium to full buildable coverage while promising to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Also contains a skin-loving Infusing Complex that stimulates skin’s natural repair functions and anti-oxidants to protect the skin.
There is a refreshing finish to this so it’s been really good to use especially with Singapore’s crazy heat and humidity. Its semi-matte finish is also great for complexions that tend to shine, like mine. It blends and builds easily, erasing the appearance of most imperfections, though you might want to give stubborn post-acne blemishes and dark under-eye circles a touch of concealer.
The downside is that the selection of shades tend to be on the lighter side, making it difficult if you’re tanned or dark-skinned.
